Slow feed dog bowls make mealtime more fun

Mealtime is serious business for dogs, but who says it cannot also be something of a game? Bright-colored food-safe plastic molded dog dishes with squiggly or maze-like designs are making the scene in many homes.

The idea behind slow feed dog bowls is that the intriguing molded plastic designs are supposed to prevent dogs from bolting down their food. Slower eating is likely to prevent bloat and promote healthier digestion. Apparently, promotional veterinarians have recommended such serving-ware for canines.

Do slow feed dog bowls really slow down hungry dogs?

Maybe they do, but it looks like we’re talking a matter of seconds here, at least in my house. My dogs manage to eat promptly, once their dishes hit the floor. But they do seem to enjoy the process!

Personally, I like that these slow feed dog dishes are sturdy and solid, with non-slip bases. Generally priced between $10 and $20, they come in multiple sizes and colors and inner patterns, so it’s easy to tell which dish belongs to which dog (for portion control and customized feeding of multiple dogs). And they hold up to countless dishwasher cycles.

Using toilet-cleaning tablets? Please shut the lid!

Dogs drink from toilets. No matter how we try to train them not to do this, most of them keep on trying.

Maybe it’s not dangerous or disease-causing. Hey, a clean flushed toilet (especially at home) is a whole lot more sanitary than most of the outdoor spots from which plenty of thirsty pooches slurp. But it still grosses us out.

Lots of pet experts claim toilet water is pretty safe for pets. The porcelain fixture keeps the water cool. Flushing makes it fresh.

Most dogs don't drink from fountains. But they tend to try the toilet.

One warning is clear. If the water is blue, it’s not right for pets. Toilet-cleaning tablets and tank cleaners contain chemicals (like bleach or ammonia, plus dyes) that pets can do better without. Here are a few examples:

Go ahead and use these convenient toilet treatment products. But please protect those pets. Though we may grimace, the potty may be more potable to pets than most ponds or puddles … unless the water is blue. So, if you drop cleaning products into the toilet tank, please be sure to keep the lid closed.

Dogs drink from all sorts of spots, clean and dirty.

Dremel 7300-PT Cordless Pet Nail Grooming Tool is handy for trims

Does your dog hate nail clippers? Mine does. She flinches and tries to pull back. More than once, she’s been clipped to the quick (causing bleeding), so we don’t like using clippers, either.

That’s why we were happy to discover the Dremel 7300-PT 4.8V Pet Nail Grooming Tool. This nifty and affordable gadget allows us to file her nails easily and comfortably. Sure, it took a little getting used to the first time. But the grinding action is pretty similar to what she experiences at the dog groomer. So she adjusted fast.

(We also use it to trim the nails of our particularly persnickety cat.)

Dremel 7300-PT Pet Nail Grooming Tool

The Dremel 7300-PT is durable and easy to operate. It does not include a guard, like similar pet-specific tools. But a careful user can make it work simply and safely.

This cordless 4.8-volt device, which is compatible with other Dremel bit accessories, sports two speeds. It is lightweight (weighing less than 1.5 pounds) and measures eight inches long. The kit includes multiple sanding heads, battery, and three-hour charger). The grinding stone, made of silicon carbide, holds up for many dog nail trims. A one-year warranty covers parts.

Priced around $25 (for Amazon Prime customers), the Dremel 7300-PT is a handy pick for dog owners. And it’s not a bad thing to have on-hand for the household tool kit, either.
